Beach of Naples The Sunshine State provides stellar opportunities in education. Numerous schooling options exist for children, including public schools, private schools, charter schools, home education, and virtual education. The Florida Department of Education provides a wealth of information for parents to consider.

Florida’s universities shine in the research arena. The University of Florida (UF) is the 4th largest in the United States and ranks 13th among the top public universities. UF is also ranked among the top best places to work in academia. UF has also been ranked by the Milken Institute as one of the top five institutions in transfer of biotechnology research to the marketplace. UF has helped produce roughly 50 biotechnology companies as a result of faculty research programs and ranks among the top 10 universities for licensing. Nearly 50,000 students attend UF each year.

Approximately 40,000 students attend Florida State University (FSU) in Tallahassee. FSU is a national graduate research university that provides over 300 degree programs among 16 schools. FSU is home to the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory, established by the National Science Foundation and containing the largest and highest powered magnet laboratory, for use by scientists in biology, biochemistry, and other fields.

The University of Miami hosts 15,000 students annually. The university boasts over $267 million in research and sponsored program expenditures (FY 2006). The University of Central Florida in Orlando has garnered over $100 million in research awards and is a leader in technology transfer, aided by the UCF Technology Incubator.

Florida is also home to many community colleges offering opportunities for advancement in the workforce. Florida holds great promise in using its educational resources to further its growth in the life sciences.
